What is a date difference?
A date difference is the amount of time that separates two calendar dates. Depending on the context, this can be expressed in total days, weeks, months, or years — each unit useful for different purposes.
Unlike simple subtraction, precise date differences must account for varying month lengths (28 to 31 days) and leap years, which add one extra day every four years (with century exceptions).

What are business days?
Business days (also called working days) are weekdays — Monday through Friday — excluding weekends and public holidays. The number of business days between two dates is commonly used in contracts, legal notices, and shipping estimates.
Our calculator estimates business days by counting weekdays between the two dates. Note that public holidays vary by country and are not automatically excluded — subtract them manually based on your region.
Frequently asked questions
A common year has 365 days. A leap year has 366 days — leap years occur in years divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400 (e.g. 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not).
By default, the count is exclusive of the start date and inclusive of the end date (i.e. the difference between Jan 1 and Jan 2 is 1 day). This matches the most common convention in date math.

Legal notice periods
Tenancy agreements, employment contracts, and commercial leases all specify notice periods — commonly 30, 60, or 90 days. Calculating notice periods incorrectly can have legal consequences. If your lease requires 60 days' notice and you calculate from today to a date 58 calendar days away, you may breach the contract. Our calculator gives you the exact count.
Event countdowns
Weddings, examinations, holidays, and milestones — how many days until the event matters for planning. A 90-day countdown to a wedding is very different from a 65-day countdown when it comes to booking vendors, sending invitations, and organizing travel for guests.

Calendar days vs business days — when each matters
Calendar days count every day including weekends and public holidays. Business days count only Monday through Friday, excluding weekends.
Which to use depends on context:
- Legal contracts — most notice periods specify "calendar days" unless explicitly stated otherwise
- Banking and financial transactions — settlement periods (T+2, T+3) use business days
- Project timelines — use business days for realistic scheduling
- Government deadlines — usually calendar days; verify with the specific regulation
- Shipping and delivery estimates — always business days (couriers don't work weekends)

Leap years and their effect on date calculations
February 29 exists only in leap years — years divisible by 4, except century years unless also divisible by 400. This means:
- 2024 was a leap year (divisible by 4)
- 2100 will NOT be a leap year (divisible by 100, not by 400)
- 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400)
Ranges that include February 29 of a leap year are one day longer than equivalent ranges in non-leap years. Our calculator accounts for every leap year in the date range for an exact count.
