What is a number-to-words converter?
A number-to-words converter translates numeric digits (like 1,250) into their written English equivalents (one thousand two hundred fifty). This is also called "spelling out" a number.
While computers and digital forms handle numerals natively, there are many situations where written word forms are required — legally, academically, or for clarity in formal documents.
When do you need to write numbers in words?
- Cheques and bank drafts — Banks require the amount written in words to prevent fraud and resolve discrepancies.
- Legal contracts — Monetary amounts in contracts are typically expressed in both numerals and words.

Pakistani & Indian number system — lakh, crore, arab
South Asia uses a different grouping system from the Western world. Instead of thousands, millions, and billions, the Pakistani and Indian number systems use lakh, crore, arab, and kharab as their major units.
Numbers are also written with different comma placement: 1,23,45,678 instead of the Western 12,345,678 — the last group has three digits, but all other groups have only two.

How the conversion works
Parse the input
The number is cleaned of commas and whitespace, then split into integer and decimal parts if a decimal point is present.
Break into groups of three
Large numbers are divided into groups of three digits from right to left — hundreds, thousands, millions, billions, trillions.
Convert each group
Each three-digit group is converted independently using ones, tens, and hundreds lookup tables.
Attach scale words
Scale words (thousand, million, billion, trillion) are appended to each group based on its position.
Handle decimals
The decimal portion is read digit by digit (e.g. 3.14 → "three point one four"), which is standard in most English-speaking countries.

1000 in words is one thousand. On a cheque it would be written as "One Thousand Dollars Only /-".
100,000 in words is one hundred thousand. It can also be expressed as "one lakh" in South Asian English.
Yes — compound numbers between 21 and 99 use a hyphen: twenty-one, forty-five, ninety-nine. Numbers above 100 do not use hyphens between the hundreds and the rest: "one hundred fifty" not "one hundred-fifty".
